99% Analog

Had a lovely meal at Sjoerd's place a little while ago, after dinner the two of us retired to his analog chambers to mess around with some old, old gear. This song's created with entirely analog devices (well, the delay and flanger pedals are technically digital, but that's about it), and as such was a bit difficult to get all sync'd up. But... well, it was entertaining.

JKT072 - sunday

JeffMinute072: Sunday

i either have allergies or the swine flu. whatever the cause, i'm coughing up a storm. today was a quiet sunday. hot tea, a stroll in the sunshine, an afternoon nap. now i'm feeling a bit better. a quiet day, a quiet minute. the melody a warm blanket, sun pouring through the window.

JKT071 - F.A.C.T.

JeffMinute071: F.A.C.T.

Yesterday woke up and tried making a minute without any real input as to how it sounded - a minute that would only reveal itself upon its first listen. First mouseclicked a very simple melody into Reason, then recorded this as a loop to ableton.

Asked Iwan for a 4-letter word, he was good enough to provide me with FACT. Then used this word to provide the framework for the construction of the minute.

1. created 4 tracks, each representing one of the letters. Kept midi notes the same for all 4 tracks.
2. Loaded semi-random presets in reason for each track. Name of the Reason preset for 1st track started with an F, 2nd with an A etc.
3. Recorded each track to Ableton one by one, changing the bpm during recording according to each letter - the F track at 60bpm (F=6th letter of alphabet), A track at 10bpm etc.
4. T track looped at original speed, C track slowed down 2x, A track slowed down 4x, F track slowed down 8x.
5. Applied different reverb effects to each track, reverb presets also beginning with the letters F, A, C and T.
6. Listened to that shit. Nicely surprised!

'cha!

Iwan & Jeff: 'CHA!

Iwan & I've been hanging out pretty much all weekend so far, making cool tunes in the day and going to strp at night. Threw this loop together last night, sounds kinda brazilian or something don't it?

March 2009

Wow - March was really a prolific month here at The Daily Minute. Actually, in this month alone we've come close to doubling the number of minutes posted in all of 2008! The best thing is that so much of it has been truly interesting stuff:

The HaamPhist brought us compositions both slightly ominous and extraordinarily serene, and Azo introduced us to a dreamworld, as well as a truly interesting belly-based composition. Such cool stuff from these guys..

We were also lucky to see posts flying in from both sides of the USA - an outstanding guitar minute from CK and two awesome minutes from ThomaSean in paradise, both different but both somehow embodied with a certain sort of joyous experimentalism.

Aah, and this was also the month that Amorphati became part of the crew! He's been blowing minds left and right since the moment he arrived... :)

Lastly, it's also been a creative month for both myself and Iwan! The 'Tross hit us with everything imaginable, from a Tanzanian Lullaby to a masterfully played Birthday Minute, from electronic to acoustic and everything inbetween. I was even lucky enough to play some small role in an experimental minute of Iwan's that I ended up loving. As for me, I posted a few things that I am actually proud of.

All in all? An amazing month. If our shared creativity continues to blossom like this? Damn... it's gonna be a very interesting place to be. Thanks to everyone involved, and to everyone who is listening! :)

Amorphati & Jeff in the thunderdome

To supplement Amorphati's post about the Teufelsberg, here is a video taken inside the tallest and largest of the abandoned radar domes. I made some other audio recordings with the melodica in there that will have to be made into songs at some point.. :)

JKT067 - On the 3rd day, Nibbles arose

JeffMinute067: And there was much rejoicing

Amorphati's Nibbles minute was really kinda bothering me. Couldn't figure out how he composes stuff like that, was really mind-boggling for me somehow. Listened to it on constant loop, one measure at a time, first panned all the way to the right and then panned all the way to the left, recreating his composition note by note in reason. Then made all minor intervals major to make that shit sound happy, like a rebirth. I'm still stumped as to how to compose something like this though... Perhaps he will teach me. I'm on the train to Berlin right now.
